Palm Oil Policy

Statement on Sustainable Palm Oil

Essential Trading is committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever possible. We understand the negative effects unsustainable palm oil production can have on rainforests, orang-utans and the indigenous populations who live there. To this end we ensure that any palm oil that we distribute or that goes into any of our products come from a sustainable source.

We purchase and distribute palm shortening in bulk from DO-IT who are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO works closely with the World Wide Fund for Nature to ensure sustainability of palm oil production. They have established 'Principles & Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production' which include preserving threatened species and high conservation value habitats. You can read more about their work here.

DO-IT possesses the highest standard of certification from the RSPO. This ensures a 100% transparent supply chain from plantation to customer and that 100% of all palm products are grown on sustainable plantations. Special care is taken to prevent cross-contamination.

Where possible we try to reduce the amount of palm oil in our own brand products, we do use palm oil in a small number of our products to ensure that they are not rancid when eaten. Essential uses palm fruit oil because it is not a hydrogenated oil and also because it significantly helps the shelf life of our products.

There are only three Essential brand products that contain palm oil: Essential Organic Flapjacks, Essential Fairtrade Organic Chocolate Spreads and Essential Sosmix. We have received assurances from our suppliers that the palm oil used in these products comes from sustainable, RSPO certified sources.
